Paintings
Orientalist traveler paintings have been a major influence on the development of the East-West: The Art of Dialogue initiative.
Mr Gabr has been collecting Orientalist paintings for over twenty years – and describes the American and European painters that visited the Middle East in the early 19th and 20th century as ‘early globalists’.
The painters traveled and lived in the Middle East; some set up studios there and learnt the languages of the region; and some married into Arab society – but all communicated via their paintings and opened routes to knowledge and understanding between East and West.
